It might be possible that in some households the usage is more and time initiated cycles might not be regenerating the water softener as often as it is required to work at an optimal level. Similarly, in case the usage is less, then cleaning at a stipulated frequency will result in unnecessary use of water and salt to regenerate it more often than what is required.
